1st Grade Science Projects

1st grade science projects are mostly just for fun, in an effort to get the kids interested in learning. They should be very basic projects and should be fun for the children to watch. You want them to learn from the experiment so be sure it is not too complex or they’re not going to remember everything that happened. You should split the kids into little groups of four or five people so they have more of an opportunity to be hands on during the experiment.

I recommend these printable science project plans for K-12 for hundreds of great project blueprints and this step-by-step guide for doing an award winning science fair project. Also be sure to check out these fun science kits as a fast, simple way to get started on your science experiment.

Materials Needed:

  • A snail (or two if you want to race them)
  • An area where there is dirt and concrete
  • A timer if you’re only using one snail
  • Vase

The Speedy Snail Experiment
Experiment: Can a snail move faster on dirt or concrete?
Category: Biology
Ages: Elementary School

A first grade science project might be to see if a snail can move faster while on concrete or dirt. This is a very basic experiment but it will be fun for the kids. You can make it even more fun by racing two snails rather than timing just one. All you need to do is go outside, hunt down some snails, then find a place where there is dirt and concrete next to each other. You can use chalk to draw a starting line and a finish line, and then simply place one snail at the starting line in the dirt and one snail at the starting line on the concrete.

Encourage the children to cheer on their favorite snail! Once one of the snails crosses the finish line, record the results and have the children return the snails to a safe place where they won’t be stepped on at recess. This 1st grade science project will work great if you remember to keep the starting line and finish line close to each other, otherwise the race may take too long.
