3rd Grade Science Projects

There are many fun 3rd grade science projects to choose from. It’s a great age to be doing science experiments because children are very interested in answering the questions that start with “What happens if.” At this age, children should be able to pick a topic on their own. Encourage them to choose a topic that interests them, so it will be fun and they’ll stick with it until the end. If they choose a topic that bores them they may not want to finish it and the parents may end up doing most of the work, which isn’t good for the parent or the child.

I recommend these printable science project plans for K-12 for hundreds of great project blueprints and this step-by-step guide for doing an award winning science fair project. Also be sure to check out these fun science kits as a fast, simple way to get started on your science experiment.

Materials Needed:

  • Two candles
  • Matches or lighter
  • Freezer

Finding Science Fun In The Third Grade
Experiment: Do frozen candles burn at the same rate as candles that have been stored at room temperature?
Category: Chemistry
Ages: Elementary School **With Adult Supervision Only

One fun third grade science project is to find out if frozen candles burn at the same rate as candles that have been stored at room temperature. The students will need adult assistance with this project as it involves fire. All you need to do is put a candle in the freezer overnight while keeping one in a drawer or cupboard, then the next morning place each candle in a holder on a stable surface. The next part is where they’ll need an adult to help out. You’ll need to light each candle and then watch them to see which one burns faster; the frozen candle or the room temperature candle. Be sure to record your results.
