4th Grade Science Experiments

4th grade science experiments are quite easy to come up with. Children this age are full of energy and very curious, so it will just be a matter of asking them to think of a question they would like answered about the world. Fourth graders are capable of planning out experiments with minimal help from their teachers or parents, but may need some guidance and encouragement to stay on track.

I recommend these printable science project plans for K-12 for hundreds of great project blueprints and this step-by-step guide for doing an award winning science fair project. Also be sure to check out these fun science kits as a fast, simple way to get started on your science experiment.

Changing The Direction of Water
Experiment: Does draining water always spiral in the same direction?

Ages: Elementary School

4th grade science experiments are quite easy to come up with. One 4th grade science experiment that would likely be of interest to your child is to find out if draining water always spirals in the same direction. You need very few materials for this project. In reality, it is just a matter of going to your materials and seeing how they work. Your first stop can be the bathroom. Make sure you take a pen and paper with you so you can record your findings. The next step is simple – flush the toilet! Then make note of which way the water spirals as its draining. You may want to find a second toilet to see if they both spiral the same direction. Next, find a sink and fill it up part way with water, then remove the plug and make note of which way the water spirals.

If possible you can also try this with a floor drain or sewer depending on the location, and see which way the water draining into it will spiral. You can then compare your results. Did the water always spiral in the same direction?
