5th Grade Science Project
A 5th grade science project is a slightly more involved science project, and less help may be provided by parents and teachers. The ideal project is one that the child can do pretty much by himself or herself, with guidance from a parent or teacher, and should take approximately one to two weeks to complete. There are lots of fun experiments for this age group but it’s still important for the child to pick a topic that really interests them.

The Physics of Popping Popcorn
Experiment: Does the temperature at which you store popcorn affect the amount of kernels that are popped?
Category: Physical Science
Ages: Elementary, Middle School
One interesting 5th grade science project is to see if the temperature at which you store bags of popcorn affects the amount of corn that pops in each bag. The first thing you’ll need to do is place the popcorn bags in various places like the freezer, fridge, and cupboard. The next day you’ll be able to start the experiment.
Put the bags of popcorn into the microwave one at a time for the amount of time suggested on the bag. You should have three separate bowls for the three bags of popcorn. Be sure to mark the bowls so you know which is which. When each bag has popped and been poured into the bowls you can eat the popcorn (it may be helpful to have some friends or family over to help you with this task) and then record how many kernels are left in each bowl.
