6th Grade Science Projects

6th grade science projects are not expected to be original; it’s perfectly okay to do an experiment that has been done before. The judges simply want to see that you have put the effort into your project and made up a nice presentation for it. Still, there are endless topics that you can choose from. Some schools start doing science fairs in sixth grade. They are not usually too competitive, and they are mostly to get the students interested.

I recommend these fun science projects kits as a fast, simple way to get started on your science experiment.

Experiment: Will adding salt or sugar to water change whether an egg floats or sinks in it?

Ages: Middle school

Materials Needed:

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 glasses
  • sugar
  • salt

One fun idea for 6th grade science projects is to see if adding salt or sugar to a glass of water will change whether an egg floats or sinks in it. All you need for this experiment is two eggs, two glasses, some sugar, some salt and a teaspoon.

Fill each glass half full with water and put an egg into each one. Take the first glass, place an egg in it and record if the egg is floating or sinking, then add a teaspoon of salt. Did anything change? Try adding a few more teaspoons of salt and record any changes after each spoonful. Do the same with the second egg.

First record whether it is floating or sinking, and then add a teaspoon of sugar and see if that changes anything. Record your results, and then try adding a few more spoonfuls. It is important to record any changes after each time you put in more salt or sugar.
