The Moldy Truth About Cheese
Experiment: What kind of cheese grows mold the fastest?
Category: Chemistry
Ages: Middle School

There are many 7th grade science fair project ideas. Your science fair is likely becoming more competitive at this age group, so you want to come up with a unique and interesting idea. As long as you choose a top that interests you and put your all into it, you’re sure to come up with a great project.

7th grade science project of interest may be finding out which kind of cheese grows mold the fastest. There are so many different kinds of cheese out there so just choose three or four types to experiment with. I would suggest parmesan, cottage cheese, and Swiss cheese to start with.

Put a slice (or scoop in the case of the cottage cheese) of cheese onto a paper plate and set the three plates in the same area making sure one of them isn’t going to get sun part of the day and the others aren’t. Be sure to keep your experiment away from pets and small children as mold is bacteria and can make people and animals very ill.

Take a picture of your cheeses on day one and again once you see mold starting to grow on one of them. Once the first type of cheese starts to grow mold you may wish to dispose of it and just keep the remaining two to see which molds next. After all, it’s not very safe to have mold around the house!
