8th Grade Science Experiments

Criteria and Ideas for 8th Grade Science Experiments

For parents, it can be challenging to help your child to successfully carry out 8th grade science experiments. You have to balance between guiding him with the simple laboratory equipment to ensure safety and leaving him to do independent studies, the latter of which is important in these kinds of science projects.

I recommend these printable science project plans for K-12 for hundreds of great project blueprints and this step-by-step guide for doing an award winning science fair project. Also be sure to check out these fun science kits as a fast, simple way to get started on your science experiment.

Criteria for the Experiments

Fortunately, you can keep the following criteria in mind whenever doubts enter your mind about the role you play in your child's science experiments for 8th graders. First, you should encourage your child to do majority of the work instead of enlisting your heavy-duty laboratory assistance. Basically, you can present ideas and then discuss them with your child while your role in laboratory work is to ensure safety.

Second, keep in mind that 8th grade science experiments involve the applications of the scientific method in designing the project. This is in contrast with other grade level projects where models of the experiment and explanations of the processes are made. As such, your child is required to present information in tables and graphs that should be submitted to the teacher as typed reports and even posters.

Third, your child must acknowledge his references sources especially if the information is not well-known, draws upon the work of others and directly quoted from said source. This is in preparation for higher level science experiments where attribution is required.

These criteria for 8th grade science experiments should serve you well as a proud parent. You will be an active participant in your child's education, to boot.

Ideas for the Experiments

And with these ideas for 8th grade level science experiments, you and your child will have an easy time choosing, too. You must discuss these ideas with your child so as to ensure that the final choice is something that interests him.

·Effect of Soap on Plants - Comparison of the effects of water-soap solutions with high or low concentrations of the latter

·Animal Vision - Color blindness amongst cats or fishes are explored along with the effects of light and dark on the vision acuity of said animals

·Baby Speak - Study on the first words learned by babies depending on a number of factors like ethnicity, season of birth and home environment

·Interspecies Plant Grafting - Research on the ability of different types of plants to be grafted unto each other (i.e., potato into tomato)

·Goldfish Care - Study on the effect of aquarium chemicals on goldfishes

·Onion Peeling - Comparisons of the efficacy between the methods used to avoid the eyes tearing every time onions are peeled (i.e., chilling, cutting in water or placing salt)

·Magnets and Plants - Research into the effects of magnets on plant growth

·Moldy Bread - Comparisons of mold growth on different types of bread

As a parent, you should be ready to provide assistance to your child in all aspects of the 8th grade science experiments. It may just involve emotional support but your child will need it as he navigates the world around him through his projects in science.
