One of the best fields to secure science fair projects is biology for many reasons. For one thing, it is easier to experiment with concepts that your child can easily understand. After all, humans are biological beings, too. For another thing, the materials necessary are readily available in and around the house. There is no need to purchase science kits, thus, encouraging your child's resourcefulness. Here are great ideas of biology-related 8th grade science projects that your child can experiment with.
Study the Skeletal System For this experiment, you may have to use the plastic skeleton used during Halloweens to demonstrate the fact that babies have more bones than adults do. Adults only have 206 bones while babies have 300 of them. This is because the fusion of bones in many areas of the body is part of the physical development process from babyhood to adulthood. Your child can demonstrate these by labeling the parts of the skeleton where the fusion takes place. With the use of charts and slide presentations, the process of bone fusion can then be explained in greater detail. Study Microorganisms in Soil This is one of the excellent 8th grade science projects especially for young gardeners. Plus, your child will be able to learn the use of a compound microscope to observe microorganisms. Your child must collect four soil samples from four different areas around the neighborhood. For example, the house gardens, the woods around the town, the municipal garden and by the riverside are diverse areas. Just remember to take the same amount of samples from the areas for control purposes. Now, in each glass jar of soil, pour the same amount of water to make soil solutions. Tightly close the lids of the jars and place them in an area where adequate sunlight is available for the maximum number of hours possible. After 10 days, your child should study the microorganisms in the soil, take down observations and draw conclusions as to which soil sample is the best for gardening.
Study Soap Effects on Plants Yet another one of the easy 8th grade science projects is studying the effects of soaps on plants particularly in terms of growth. The materials are very easy, too - four Petri dishes, filter paper to cover each dish, wheat seeds distributed equally over the four dishes, water and four different types of soaps. Combine water to the different types of soaps and then place each solution into a Petri dish. Be sure to label the dishes for later observation. Soak the wheat grains in the solution overnight and then place 5-8 drops of the respective water-soap solutions every day for a week. You should take down notes about the growth of the wheat seeds every day, too. At the end of the week, you can translate your notes into charts and graphs for presentation.
