No Soil…Can It Germinate?
Experiment: Can a seed germinate without soil?
Category: Biology
Ages: Elementary, Middle School
One easy science project is to see if a seed can germinate without soil. To do this experiment you will need some seeds, paper towels, newspaper, water and plastic baggies. Get three plastic baggies and in the first one put some wet paper towels and stick a few seeds in the bag with the paper towels. In the second bag put some wet newspaper and put some seeds in as well. In the third bag just put a little bit of water and some seeds in. Then, place the baggies in a warm sunny place such as a windowsill and check on them once a day. If the newspaper or paper towels get dry add some water to them, and if the baggie with just water gets dry put some more water in. After a few days or a week see if any of your seeds have begun to sprout. Have any of them? Have one or two of them? Make a chart to show the results.
There are lots of easy projects that can be done with plants. Simply think of a question you or your child has about plants and see if you can do an experiment to answer that question.
