Science Made Easy
Experiment: Learning about static electricity
Category: Physics>Electricity
Ages: Elementary School

One easy science project for kids is to learn about static electricity. This can be accomplished with materials you likely have laying around the house. All you need is a balloon, a comb, a plate and some small scrap pieces of paper. This experiment works best in the winter.

First, you need to tear the scrap paper into tiny pieces and place them on the plate. Next, you can have your child run the comb through his or her hair. The comb will now chase the bits of scrap paper around the plate. For the next phase of the experiment, you can blow up the balloon and tie it. Vigorously rub the balloon on your child’s hair, or have him or her rub it on your hair. The balloon should now stick to the wall because of the static electricity.

This is an especially fun project for young kids because it’s hands on and they get to see the results right away. It is also great for the parents because, in most cases, they can use materials that they already have in the house. Even if you have to buy one or two of the items required, it is still a very inexpensive project they can share with their children.
