Elementary Science Experiments

Elementary science experiments can be lots of fun as the kids are just starting to explore the world around them and are always full of questions about how things work and why. There are so many possibilities for elementary science experiments that it may be hard to pick just one! One example of an elementary science project would be to test and see if different brands of popcorn leave different amounts of un-popped kernels. All you need for this experiment is a microwave, a few bags of different brands of popcorn and a few bowls, as well as a pencil and paper to record your results.

I recommend these printable science project plans for K-12 for hundreds of great project blueprints and this step-by-step guide for doing an award winning science fair project. Also be sure to check out these fun science kits as a fast, simple way to get started on your science experiment.

Materials Needed:

  • Microwave
  • Several different brands of popcorn
  • A few bowls

What Brand Of Popcorn Pops The Best
Experiment: Do different brands of popcorn leave different amounts of un-popped kernels?
Category: Physical Science
Ages: Elementary School

The first step is to put one bag of popcorn into the microwave, pop it and then pour it into one of the bowls. When the popcorn cools you can move it all into one of the other bowls so you can count the remaining kernels left in the first bowl. You may want to have a volunteer or three on hand to help you eat all this popcorn.

After you have recorded your results you can dispose of the left over popcorn kernels and put the second bag of popcorn into the microwave. Repeat the same process for this bag when it is done popping. Count the leftover kernels, dispose of them and pop the third bag of popcorn into the microwave and repeat the same process.

Once you have tried all the different brands, compare your results. Which brand left the least kernels un-popped? Which brand left the most kernels un-popped?
