Fourth Grade Science Projects

Fourth grade science projects generally involve answering a question, solving a problem or testing a hypothesis. While fourth graders can usually conduct the experiment primarily on their own, they will often require help from parents or teachers to come up with a project idea and to set the wheels in motion. One of the most important things to keep in mind is that the project should be interesting in order to hold the child’s attention.

I recommend these printable science project plans for K-12 for hundreds of great project blueprints and this step-by-step guide for doing an award winning science fair project. Also be sure to check out these fun science kits as a fast, simple way to get started on your science experiment.

Can Plants Grow With Milk?
Experiment: Will seeds grow if they are watered with a liquid other than water?
Category: Chemistry
Ages: Elementary

One interesting project for a fourth grade science project is to find out if seeds will grow when watered with a liquid other than water, such as milk, juice and vinegar.

The materials you will need for this project are a package of seeds, some small pots to plant them in, some potting soil and the different liquids, milk, juice and vinegar.

The first thing you need to do is fill three different pots with potting soil, and put four or five seeds about one inch deep in the soil in the middle of each pot. You can then put a piece of masking tape on each pot and label them one by one; milk, juice and vinegar.

Next, find a sunny place to put the pots, such as a windowsill, and place the pots side by side so they all get the same amount of sunlight. Then, water each one with the liquid assigned to it and repeat this process every other day until you notice one or more of the seeds beginning to sprout. Be sure to record your findings.
