Free Science Experiments

There are plenty of free science experiments available. In many cases, you can just use things you already have around your house; there are many experiments involving house hold items, like food or water.

One such experiment is to test the effect of salt on the boiling temperature of water. A lot of cooking instructions tell you to add salt to the water before boiling it. Does this really affect the boiling temperature? To find out, you will need some table salt, distilled water, a two quart cooking pot, a pint measuring cup, a tablespoon measuring spoon, a thermometer and a stirring

I recommend these printable science project plans for K-12 for hundreds of great project blueprints and this step-by-step guide for doing an award winning science fair project. Also be sure to check out these fun science kits as a fast, simple way to get started on your science experiment.

Materials Needed:

  • Table salt
  • Distilled water
  • 2 Quart cooking pot
  • Pint measuring cup
  • Tablespoon measuring spoon
  • Thermometer
  • Stirring spoon

Salt And Boiling Water
Experiment: What is the effect of salt on the boiling temperature of water?
Category: Chemistry
Ages: Elementary, Middle School**With Adult Supervision

To begin, have an adult boil one quart of distilled water on a stove. Once it’s really boiling, measure the temperature of the water and record the highest temperature reading. This will be the control to compare with. Next, measure out the table salt in the tablespoon measuring spoon, add it to the boiling water and stir. Record the highest temperature reading. Then, measure out another tablespoon full of salt and add it to the boiling water and stir. Record the highest temperature reading with two tablespoons of salt. Then compare your findings. You can continue adding tablespoons of salt if you would like to see how it affects the temperature of the water the more salt you add.
