Ideas For Science Projects

There are plenty of ideas for science projects for all ages. All you need to do is choose a category that interests you; you can choose from Astronomy, Biology, Zoology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Engineering, Environmental, Microbiology, Physical Science, or Mathematics. Once you have chosen a category that interests you you can move on to choosing a topic, and then a question.

I recommend these printable science project plans for K-12 for hundreds of great project blueprints and this step-by-step guide for doing an award winning science fair project. Also be sure to check out these fun science kits as a fast, simple way to get started on your science experiment.

Materials Needed:

  • Seeds
  • Six peat cups
  • Potting soil
  • Miracle Gro (inorganic fertilizer)
  • Mixture of Alaskan liquid fish emulsion (organic fertilizer)

Fertilizers, What Works Best?
Experiment: Which are more effective, organic or inorganic fertilizers?
Category: Chemistry
Ages: Middle School

One idea for a science project is to see which fertilizer is more effective, organic or inorganic. For this project you will need six peat cups, some seeds, potting soil and your inorganic fertilizer – Miracle Gro, and organic fertilizer – a mixture of Alaskan liquid fish emulsion. Then you simply put potting soil into the six peat cups and plant one seed in each cup.

Fertilize three of the pots with organic fertilizer and the other three with inorganic fertilizer and water each of them. Be sure to label the cups so you know which fertilizer you used in each one. Place them on a sunny window sill and water them every other day. Put more fertilizer in once a week and record their growth after one, two and three weeks.

Make a chart so you can show your results. Be sure to do a hypothesis before you begin your project. Do you think the cups with the organic fertilizer will grow better and faster than the cups with the inorganic fertilizer? Or do you think it will be the other way around? You can ask other people what they think will happen as well.
