Middle School Science Fair Projects

Middle school science fair projects tend to be a bit more involved than the ones you would be doing in elementary school. This is to prepare you for high school science fairs, which can be quite competitive and require much more hard work than elementary school and middle school.

I recommend these printable science project plans for K-12 for hundreds of great project blueprints and this step-by-step guide for doing an award winning science fair project. Also be sure to check out these fun science kits as a fast, simple way to get started on your science experiment.

One middle school science fair project that can be quite interesting is to see if a plant’s growth is affected by the amount of light it receives.

Materials Needed:

  • Three of the same type of plant
  • Three boxes or cabinets to use as test rooms
  • Three different light sources that will be mounted inside the test rooms; 25 watt, 60 watt and 100 watt bulbs

Experiment: Will a plant’s growth be affected by the amount of light it receives?
Category: Earth Science
Ages: Elementary, Middle School

For this project, you will need three plants of the same variety, shape and size, and three boxes or preferably cabinets to use as test rooms and three different bulbs to be mounted inside the cabinets; a 25 watt bulb, a 60 watt bulb and a 100 watt bulb. You then need to mount the light bulbs in the cabinets, making sure they are going to be far enough away from the plants that they will not cause the plants to burn. Place the three identical plants in the three test rooms. Be sure to label each cabinet 25, 60 and 100, so you know which cabinet has which bulb in it.

Make sure that the test rooms have proper ventilation. Water and inspect your plants every day and record your results for at least ten days. You will then see if the amount of light that each plant receives helps it grow faster, or makes it grow slower than the others. It will be helpful to make a chart to keep track of your results.
