Science Experiment Ideas

There are endless science experiment ideas, so it is a good idea to narrow down your interests before trying to pick a project to do. Even when you do pick a topic that interests you, you will still need to decide what aspect of that topic you would like to explore. For instance, if you choose stars as the topic that interests you, there are many different categories that touch on the subject of stars such as Astronomy, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. You need to decide what it is about the topic you have picked that you would like to find out more about.

I recommend these printable science project plans for K-12 for hundreds of great project blueprints and this step-by-step guide for doing an award winning science fair project. Also be sure to check out these fun science kits as a fast, simple way to get started on your science experiment.

Making Weather In The Classroom
Experiment: Making a homemade tornado
Category: Earth Science
Ages: Elementary School

If you are interested in Earth science experiments, then a good one to try might be to make a homemade tornado. This is a very simple project and requires very few materials. All you need is a fairly large glass jar with a lid, some water, dish soap, a teaspoon, some food coloring, and a few monopoly houses if you want to be silly.

Fill the jar about ¾ full with water, add a few drops of food coloring and a teaspoon of dish soap. You can throw in a few monopoly houses to give it that “Wizard of Oz” effect. Put the lid on the jar and shake it vigorously for about 20 seconds. Then give the jar a good twist and the liquid inside the jar will form a funnel that looks and acts just like a real live tornado. The body of the tornado will even lengthen and contract just like the real thing!
