Science Experiments Kids
There are many science experiments kids can do at home for fun and educational purposes. Many of the science experiments are do at home and hands on or interactive. Out of all of the science experiments kids do at home one stands out among the rest. That would be the erupting volcano. This experiment has it all. It is fun, creative and educational.
I recommend these printable science project plans for K-12 for hundreds of great project blueprints and this step-by-step guide for doing an award winning science fair project. Also be sure to check out these fun science kits as a fast, simple way to get started on your science experiment.
Make a Volcano
Category: Chemistry/Earth Science
Ages: Elementary, Middle school
|
Materials Needed:
2 Liter Soda Bottle
Funnel
Clay or Play Doh
Safety Goggles
Food Coloring
Dish Soap
Baking Soda
Vinegar
|
To begin this experiment have your children make a volcano using the clay and the soda bottle. They will use the soda bottle as the base of the volcano shaping the clay around it in the shape of a volcano. Make sure they leave the opening of the soda bottle free of clay and that no clay gets in the soda bottle.
Once your children have created the volcano they are ready for their first lesson in chemistry! Have them put one liter of warm water in the hole of the volcano using a funnel. Then, have them put two or three drops of red or orange food coloring in the bottle. At this point they should place their safety goggles on.
Once the kids have their safety goggles on they can begin the mixing of the substances that will be involved in the reaction. Have them put a few drops of detergents in the bottle first. Then, have them add about two tablespoons of the baking soda to the bottle. Finally, have them start pouring vinegar in the bottle. Step back and watch the lava flow!
When this experiment is finished you can explain why the reaction occurred. The reaction actually occurs because you are mixing the baking soda and vinegar. When these two substances are mixed they create carbon dioxide. When the pressure from the C02 builds up in an actual volcano it forces the lava to flow from the volcano. Or in this case the soapy water!
