Easy Science Fair Projects
For 5th Grade

Here we'll give you two ideas for science fair projects for 5th grade.

These science projects don’t take much preparation, but they teach scientific method and are simple for 5th grade science fairs. They both explore the properties of water.

Science Fair Projects For 5th Grade #1: Temperature and Rate of Evaporation

These science fair projects for 5th grade explore the variable of temperature on water evaporation

MATERIALS:
science fair projects for 5th grade

  • 3 identical glasses
  • lamp with old-style lightbulb (fluorescent bulbs and CFLs won’t do)
  • 3 thermometers
  • ruler
  • water
  • refrigerator

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Come up with your hypothesis – do you think that water will evaporate more quickly in heat, cold, or room temperature?

2. Fill all of your glasses to the same level with tap water. Use your ruler to make sure they all have exactly the same amount of water.

3. Place one glass on a counter or shelf, one in the fridge, and one under the lamp.

4. (be aware that different refrigerators will have different levels of humidity. If your fridge has a crisper drawer, consider putting another glass and thermometer there.)

5. Put a thermometer in each of the 3 glasses

6. Come back after an hour or so to record initial temperature

7. For the next two to three weeks or until all the water is gone, visit each glass once per day to record the temperature and level of the water.

8. Graph your results for an especially scientific 5th grade science fair project!

*NOTE: Be aware that the environmental differences can affect this science fair project for 5th grade. If you live in a place where humidity fluctuates, keep this in mind during the project

Science Fair Projects For 5th Grade #2:
Sink or Swim

These science fair projects for 5th grade how much weight can be held up on a given surface area floating over the water

MATERIALS:
5th grade science fair projects

  • Aluminum foil
  • Rice (dried)
  • Large bowl
  • Water
  • Postal scale (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Come up with your hypothesis – how many grains of rice do you think it will take to sink your aluminum raft?

2. Fill a bowl with water.

3. Cut out a square of aluminum foil and fold it over once or twice. Raise the edges a little so the rice won’t roll off.

4. Place it on the surface of the water. Add one grain of rice at a time.

5. Write down how many grains of rice there were when the raft sank.

6. If you have a postal scale, dry the raft off and add the same number of rice grains (the old ones will be too wet now). Then weigh the raft with the rice in it.

7. If you want an especially advanced science fair project for 5th grade, try this: cut out multiple rafts of different sizes. Measure their area and repeat the experiment once for each. See if the ratio of area to weight remains constant.
