Testing Your Own Sense Of Smell
Experiment: Do you have smell-o-vision?
Category: Biology
Ages: Elementary, Middle School

One idea for a science project is to see if your personal smell is able to be identified by others. Each person has their own individual smell, much the same as everyone has their own set of finger prints. To do this experiment you need to get three identical t-shirts that have all been washed together, and mark an “X” on the tag of one of them.

Next, put on the shirt with the “X” on the tag and wear it around for a few hours, trying not to get it dirty at all. After a few hours take off the shirt, get the other two shirts, and mix the three of them up.

Get your volunteers to smell each shirt and see if they can identify which one is the one you were wearing. You could also give the three shirts to three different people and have them wear them for a few hours, and then have volunteers try to figure out which shirt belongs to whom. You could even have the participants try to identify their own shirt after you have mixed them up.
