Second Grade Science Projects

Second grade science projects can be a lot of fun, as the children are just learning how to find out information for themselves, rather than having everything simply told to them. It’s a great idea to have the children work in pairs or a small group as they’re not old enough to conduct an entire experiment on their own, or to present it on their own, and working in groups will make it more fun. The results of the experiment they choose to do will not soon be forgotten for the simple fact that they had to learn it on their own.

I recommend these printable science project plans for K-12 for hundreds of great project blueprints and this step-by-step guide for doing an award winning science fair project. Also be sure to check out these fun science kits as a fast, simple way to get started on your science experiment.

Materials Needed:

  • One mouse
  • A maze (homemade or store bought)
  • A timer

Speedy Mice
Experiment: How fast can a mouse run through a maze?
Category: Biology
Ages: Elementary School

Fun 2nd grade science projects is to see how fast a mouse can make it through a maze. You can actually buy mazes from pet stores now, or you can get the children to make one, but they will definitely need some adult assistance. The only other items you need are the mouse and a timer. You can likely talk to your local pet shop about borrowing a mouse solely for this purpose, but if they aren’t willing to lend you one then be sure you have someone who will take care of the mouse after you’re done with it. You also need to watch the children closely as they can get very excited when there’s a little creature around and you don’t want them to hurt it by accident. All you need to do for this project is to set the mouse at one end of the maze, and start the timer. Then the children can enjoy watching the mouse make his way through. Once he gets to the end you stop the time and record your results.
